Winter 2022
Our design was inspired by ‘Shadow Series’, a collaboration by artist Owen Gildersleeve and photographer Stephen Lenthall that explored light, form and shadows. We intended to create a space that showcased light and explore how light is able to create a new form within a constructed environment. After creating our model we captured two series of images. The first utilized artificial light and printed sheets of orange paper. We curved one sheet of paper around the outside of the light source creating a temporary shade and placed a second sheet next to the outside base of our model. The reflection of the light off of the glossy colored paper created an ethereal orange glow on the interior of our model. The second image we captured with direct natural daylight, shot around 4:30 PM. This light allowed us to capture crisp outlines of the light entering our model. When capturing both images we made a slight modification to our model. We moved the black wall in the background up to the two walls, closing the gap we originally had designed in our model. This change allowed us to prevent unintended shadows from forming in the background of our images when taking the
photographs.
